I took a picture of my friend, who has brown eyes, and the picture came out showing him with blue cat eyes!?

I used a Canon Rebel, taking a picture of my friend, and his eyes came out looking blue and cat-like. This has never happened before, and no one believes that I did not edit the picture! What could cause this strange effect?
