Which is better: the Canon EOS Rebel XS or the Nikon D3000?

I am looking for my first DSLR camera and I was wondering which was better between the two. They are both near my price range since I'm asking for one of them for my birthday So which is better for a "beginner"? Any answers would be great! Thanks!!
