Why does my canon turn off when i lift the pop-up flash?

when i lift the flash on my canon rebel s camera, the screen fades away and the camera turns off. it comes back to life only when I remove and reinsert the battery after putting the flash back down. i just got this camera and i don't know when or how this problem started. please help.
